Thanks for the plug, Matt! I have to agree, The Book of the Maidservant would make a perfect Christmas present!

If somebody is looking for a nice, fat, upper-middle grade fantasy trilogy, let me recommend Steve Augarde's Touchstone Trilogy (The Various, Celandine, and Winter Wood). Augarde creates such a convincing world and characters I found it hard to say goodbye to. It's set in England and feels both contemporary (mobile phones) and old-fashioned (little people). If you don't want the whole trilogy, The Various is a stand-alone title (but I dare any reader to try to stop there--just tryit!).

For YA readers, you simply cannot beat Francis X. Stork's Marcelo in the Real World, which I hope wins the Printz. What a beautiful, beautiful book, and I'm not just talking about its gorgeous cover!

I love the idea of books for Christmas presents! I've read a few of your suggestions, and I agree with your recommendations. As for the others, I'll have to give them a try.

Thanks!
