{"id":28,"date":"2008-12-18T15:55:37","date_gmt":"2008-12-18T15:55:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/matthewkirby.com\/kirbside\/?p=28"},"modified":"2008-12-18T15:55:37","modified_gmt":"2008-12-18T15:55:37","slug":"last-supper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/?p=28","title":{"rendered":"Last supper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-62\" title=\"My Last Supper\" src=\"http:\/\/matthewkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/my-last-supper_000-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"My Last Supper\" width=\"140\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/my-last-supper_000-222x300.jpg 222w, http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/my-last-supper_000.jpg 445w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 140px) 100vw, 140px\" \/>I was listening to a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicbroadcasting.net\/kuer\/news\/news.newsmain?action=article&amp;ARTICLE_ID=1424232&amp;sectionID=184\" target=\"_blank\">Radiowest podcast<\/a><\/span><\/span> on <span class=\"byline\"><span class=\"article-content\">photographer Melanie Dunea&#8217;s new book <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/My-Last-Supper-Portraits-Interviews\/dp\/1596912871\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1229549082&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">My Last Supper<\/a><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0 In it, she asks 50 famous chefs a few seemingly simple questions about what they would like for their last meal in life.\u00a0 What would they eat?\u00a0 Who would prepare it?\u00a0 Where would they eat it?\u00a0 Who would they eat it with?\u00a0 Their answers reveal a lot about what food really means to us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"byline\"><span class=\"article-content\">I&#8217;ve spent some time thinking about how I would respond to those questions.\u00a0 My answers <em>right now<\/em> might have been different a year ago, and might even be different tomorrow, but here goes&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"byline\"><span class=\"article-content\">For my last meal, I want a traditional Hawaiian luau.\u00a0 Not one of the cheesy tourist luaus you get in the Waikiki hotels.\u00a0 I want a <em>real<\/em> luau.\u00a0 I want lomi-lomi salmon, poke, poi that&#8217;s about a day old, butterfish laulau, rice, and (of course) kalua pig.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"byline\"><span class=\"article-content\">That last one is very important, and I want to be there when the pig comes out of the smoking, steaming ground.\u00a0 When the chicken wire can barely keep the fall-apart meat together.\u00a0 When little bits of crispy skin stick to the wire as you unwrap the pig, and you pick them off and eat them on the spot.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"byline\"><span class=\"article-content\">I want live music.\u00a0 Slack key guitar, ukulele, and traditional Hawaiian folk songs.\u00a0 Just real people singing real music with each other.\u00a0 (Hmm. &#8220;Real&#8221;
