{"id":3301,"date":"2012-09-09T18:57:00","date_gmt":"2012-09-10T00:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/?p=3301"},"modified":"2012-09-09T18:57:00","modified_gmt":"2012-09-10T00:57:00","slug":"pen-center-usa-and-the-infinity-ring-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/?p=3301","title":{"rendered":"PEN Center USA, and the Infinity Ring launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m honored and pleased to announce that <em>Icefall<\/em> has won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penusa.org\/2012-literary-award-winners\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2012 PEN Center USA Literary Award for Children&#8217;s Literature<\/span><\/a>! I continue to be humbled and touched by the attention <em>Icefall<\/em> has received. As I&#8217;ve talked about many times, Solveig and her story are very close and personal to me, and I love that the book has resonated with others. Congratulations to the other finalists, including Trent Reedy for <em>Words in the Dust<\/em>, Allen Say for <em>Drawing from Memory<\/em>, and Gretchen Woelfle for <em>All the World&#8217;s a Stage: A Novel in Five Acts<\/em>. One of the judges for this year&#8217;s award did a write up <a href=\"http:\/\/carolinearnoldart.blogspot.com\/2012\/09\/icefall-by-matthew-kirby-winner-of-pen.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">here<\/span><\/a>. I look forward to going to the banquet to receive the award next month.<\/p>\n<p>______________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Last month, James Dashner&#8217;s <em>Infinity Ring Book 1: A Mutiny in Time<\/em> came out in bookstores, and I was fortunate enough to be there for the big launch in Salt Lake City on August 29th. James did a couple of school visits that day, and I went along with him. We went to Canyon Rim and Rowland Hall, and both schools were a blast (in spite of the fact that James told the kids I was a serial killer. I mean, look at this picture:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/photo-22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3303\" title=\"James, the serial killer\" src=\"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/photo-22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/photo-22.jpg 640w, http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/photo-22-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now tell me, which of us looks more like a serial killer?) More so now, I think because the school year has started and I&#8217;m not working with the kids on a daily basis anymore. It&#8217;s been a bit odd for me. Even though I am so excited to be writing full-time, a part of me misses it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/photo-13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3313\" title=\"Canyon Rim assembly\" src=\"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/photo-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/photo-13.jpg 640w, http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/photo-13-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After the school visits, Jennifer Nielsen joined us for the launch event at the Salt Lake City Public Library, hosted by the amazing folks at The King&#8217;s English. At the event, I told the audience that The King&#8217;s English is the heart of the writing community in Utah, and I meant it. During the event, James, Jen, and I did a reader&#8217;s theater, each taking one of the three main characters in the <em>Infinity Ring<\/em>, with special guest <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/brodiashton.blogspot.com\/\">Brodi Ashton<\/a><\/span> as the narrator.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/photo-32.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3314\" title=\"Readers' Theater: Me, Jen, &amp; James\" src=\"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/photo-32.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"632\" srcset=\"http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/photo-32.jpg 640w, http:\/\/matthewjkirby.com\/kirbside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/photo-32-300x296.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And afterward, we signed books and posters. First, how fun it is to be involved in something like <em>The Infinity Ring<\/em>, with such talented writers and friends. Second, how amazing it is that three of the six <em>Infinity Ring<\/em> authors are from Utah.
